Complete California Taxes and Fees

A Taxed State

California is one of the most heavily taxed states in the US.  This is an exhaustive list of the regulated taxes and fees.  Unfourtantly, there are dozens of special assessments, bond measures, and other fees that are not in the official list that you will be charged.

For example, in the new Gas Tax law that was passed, there are fees for electric vehicles, a pilot program for milage based fuel tax, and other fees that are not listed below.  The state that consistently proposes new taxes and fees should be required to list all of them so we as residents of California can keep the taxes and fees in check.

Even with most of these taxes, we are still under assault for additional property taxes, food taxes, environment taxes, and more school taxes.  Just recently the school board was able to put a tax on the ballot that was a fee per sq. ft of property that you owned.  For the average resident that owns a house, it would have added nearly $1K per year.

If you live in California or are considering moving to California be warned that not only will you have one of the highest income taxes in the US, you will have dozens of other fees that add up to thousands of dollars.

Other Ways They Tax You

If all the taxes are not bad enough, look at some of the other ways they get money:

-A parking ticket can have a base rate of $25, but can easily be doubled with extra fees and taxes they add on after the fact.
-Cities follow suite with things like the plastic bag tax that charges $.10 per bag you take from the store (where does all the money go?)
-California has a 33 percent tax on fruit bought through a vending machine.
-$45 car rental fee tax
-16.5% hotel tax (in most cities)

Take a look at the gas fees breakdown:

Unchecked Taxes Lead to Unchecked Spending

As you would imagine, all the taxes California collects amounts to enormous spending.  For some that might be a good thing, but unchecked spending leads to waste and abuse.  Along with the highest taxes, California also leads or is close to the top of all other states in homeless problems (even outspending most states), poor school performance (with almost the highest per-pupil spending), and the worst roads in the country in terms of traffic and conditions.   You also have huge expenditures for things like the bullet train that is 10X over budget that will never be high speed and probably cost more than $100B if it were ever to be completed.  Over $1B spent on watering a dry lake in the Owens valley to reduce air pollution.  A stem cell organization that voters approved that has really produced nothing and is home to the states highest-paid employees.  The list goes on.
